The goal of the Language Arts curriculum is for all students to achieve English language literacy. This is accomplished through a sequential, comprehensive curriculum that develops lifelong, critical thinkers who approach problem solving with confidence. Academic content standards in the course of study are organized through the strands of reading, literature, writing and language, researchandinquiry, and oral and visual communication. Content standards in all strands must be mastered in order for Alabama’s students to achieve this goal. No strand stands alone; all strands are necessary and depend upon each other for the complete program required for reaching the goal of English language literacy. The strands are found throughout the course of study from kindergarten through high school courses, with concepts and skills increasing in rigor from grade to grade.
