Lesson Plans:

El Día de los Muertos
This site has a lesson on comparing Halloween in the U.S. with El Dia de los Muertos; and it will help your students develop insight into the language and culture.

Deportes En España
In this lesson you will use the Internet to explore sports, identify cognates, use cognates to help guess meaning, identify false cognates, and find and illustrate a news article on a favorite sport.

America, A Home for Every Culture
In this lesson students will identify the words that became part of the English language as a result of immigrant groups settling in America.  They will also be able to identify the origin of music and instruments from a variety of ethnic background.

Cognate Detectives
In this lesson students will learn that there are words in English and Spanish that share the same root. These words are visibly and audibly very similar and have the same meaning. Students will become detectives exploring the many cognates in Spanish and English.

Tasty Tidbits From Spain
Students will gain and use vocabulary which deals with some Spanish foods.  They will also compare typical American meals with typical Spanish meals.

Electronic Journals about Latin American Folktales
This lesson combines technology and research using authentic student-to-student dialog about folktales from their countries. Folklore genre provides the context through which students will learn more about Latin American countries.  Teachers will need to subscribe to an Internet discussion list intended for teachers seeking classroom partners for an intercultural email project.

A Discourse on the History of Language
In this lesson, students analyze the information used by linguists to construct the evolution of languages. They then research different dating techniques to understand how scientists infer age with evidence.

Cinderella Folk Tales: Variations in Character
This lesson will teach the changes the Cinderella story undergoes when it is translated from one culture to another; and the things that remain the same transcending all cultures.

Cinderella Folk Tales: Variations in Plot and Setting
This lesson will answer the following questions: How do the plot and setting of Cinderella change as it is translated into a different culture? What literary elements of the Cinderella story are universal?
