| Lesson Plans: Exploring Satire with Shrek Students brainstorm fairy tale characteristics, identify the satirical techniques used to present them in the movie, then create their own satirical versions of fairy tales. Avoiding Sexist Language by Using Gender-Fair Pronouns This lesson plan engages students in a brief writing assignment that concretely illustrates how language and gender stereotyping interact causally. Revising and Editing Several lesson suggestions to help students proof and edit their writing. An Internet Treasure Hunt Students learn to use Internet resources for conducting research. This supplemental unit provides resources for students in 11-12th grade to focus on issues and themes related to to George Orwell's novel,1984. During these lessons, students examine the novel's themes and make connection to current issues and their lives. Students will produce a variety of written products including essays, e-mail, and analysis of modern political discourse. Like the Back of My Hand The purpose of this exercise is to introduce students to writing for fun. |

| Resources: Using Primary Sources Students learn to distinguish between primary and secondary sources of information. Students also learn to find and evaluate primary sources for research projects.
