This lesson uses multiple modalities to
introduce and practice many common homophones. Students will engage in
singing, acting, creative writing, and drawing to demonstrate their
understanding of homophones.
Understanding Homophones
Correct spelling in writing is very important – if your writings have
misspelled words or wrong word usage, your reader may not understand
what you are trying to say. Homophones are words that are very often
misused and misspelled.

This lesson is designed to review/practice using homophones in rhyme
and sentences.

incorrect spelling of homophones. Your students can locate the
errors and listen to the song.

Suggestions for English Language Learners:

and use spelling logs.
(E/B) Identify spelling rules.
(E/B) Identify systematic spelling errors.
(D, E) Students work in small groups or with partners to peer
edit and check spelling. Teacher may also lead class edits on the
chalkboard or overhead.

Students word-process their written
work to check for spelling errors. Students decide if the
spell-check has given a correct suggestion or inappropriate
suggestion for spelling according to the context of the written
work.
