Algebra 2
Std 5: Identify the characteristics of quadratic functions from their roots, graphs, or equations.
  • Writing an equation when given its roots or graph
  • Graphing a function when given its equation

Examples: graphing equations of the form y = a(x-h)2 + k, graphing equations of the form
    y = ax2 + bx + c

  • Determining the nature of the solutions of a quadratic equation
  • Determining the maximum or minimum values of quadratic functions both graphically and algebraically

Lesson Plans

Chicago Public Schools
This is a structured lesson that includes activities, worksheets, and assessment (Day 65).

Hurricane Force
Students use a USA today graphic that gives the windspeed and pounds per square foot to create a scatterplot that shows the quadratic increase in force as windspeed increases.

Max/Min Problems
This site has three pages with different types of maximum and minimum problems - laid out in a lesson plan/teaching format.  The first page also contains how to write the equation given data.

A little bit of it all
Solving quadratics by the quadratic formula; Definition, use, and practice for the discriminant; Comparison of solving methods; Writing the equation from a given solution

Resources:

Quadratic Solver
An online applet that solves using the quadratic formula.

SOS Math
This site is an online tutorial that explains many of the concepts in Algebra 2. It includes exercises.

MathsNet
This is an online tutorial that describes the discriminant. It has an interactive discriminant calculator and a grapher.

Worksheets
This site has links for a lot of worksheets related to this objective.  You get about 15 questions per worksheet without joining.
