Algebra 2
Std 6: Perform operations on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition.
  • Determining the inverse of a function or a relation
  • Performing operations on polynomial and rational expressions containing variables

    Example: simplifying

  • Constructing graphs by analyzing their functions as sums or differences

Lesson Plans

Chicago Public Schools
Students learn meaning and algebra of compositions. See day 7.

Chicago Public Schools
Students define, examine, do algebraic activities, and do hands-on activities with inverses. Days 5-10.

Chicago Public Schools
Detailed examination of inverses with calculator applications. See days 91 and 92.

Getting Out of Line (Function Patterns)
This lesson from PBS has students develop models and look at inverses of a variety of functions. There is an accompanying video.

Chicago Public Schools
This lesson for day 29 approaches inverses of linear functions from several directions. Day 30 and 31 provide a strong introduction to the composition of functions.

Bungee Barbie®
This Bungee Barbie activity arrives at a damped sine wave model combining exponential and trigonometric functions. The activity uses data gathered with the CBL.

Chicago Public Schools
This is a collection of structured daily lesson plans that covers rational functions.

Basic Properties of Rational Expressions
This is a complete list of skills related to rational expressions, including examples and their solutions.

Chicago Public Schools
Structured daily lesson plans that cover polynomial operations complete with activities and cutouts for comparing volumes.

Purplemath
This is an online tutorial that walks through all polynomial operations.

Chicago Public Schools
This is a collection of structured daily lesson plans, including worksheets and assessments.

Building Boxes (Polynomial and Rational Functions)
In this lesson, students investigate rational and polynomial functions. Students determine the maximum volume of a box. It has a video of the lesson available online for the teacher.

Factoring a Difference of Squares
A lesson that demonstrates the geometric representation of factoring of a difference of squares.

Chicago Public Schools
This is a structured lesson plan that provides strategies for teaching, examples, worksheets, and assessments. (Day 133-141 9 days of lesson plans)

Chicago Public Schools
Logarithmic function defined as the inverse of the exponential function.

Resources:

Multiplying and Dividing Rational Functions
This is an online tutorial with learning objectives detailing rational expressions.

Pennies, Pressure, Temperature, and Light
The major goal of this lesson is to collect data from a variety of experiments, and then determine what type of model best fits the data, and explain why. Students will explore a variety of relationships using pennies, pressure, temperature, light, and pendulums to determine the algebraic equation that best represents the pattern modeled by the variables involved in each situation.

Periodic Functions
This site is has a good explanation with pictures describing the change in the parameters of trigonometric graphs.

Understanding Algebraic Factoring
Factoring using Algebra Tiles. Great for an overhead projector.

Interactive Polynomial Multiplication
This interactive applet shows live examples of polynomial multiplication, division, and calculus.

Practice worksheets
Downloadable practice worksheets with the answers on combining polynomials.
