Algebra 2
Std 11: Determine an equation of linear regression from a set of data.

Examining data to determine if a linear or quadratic relationship exists and to predict outcomes

Lesson Plans

Real Population Data
Students investigate real population data and plot them using the TI graphing calculator. Several activities are included as well as instructions on how to use the calculator to plot data.

What’s the Point?
This unit introduces students to technology as a means of graphing linear equations on a graphing calculator and finding the point of intersection and inputting data into lists.

Windspeed vs. Temperature
In this activity, students will create their own anemometer, an instrument used to measure wind speed. Using this tool and the Beaufort Scale, students will measure and record estimated and average wind speeds. As an extension, students can plot and then analyze real-world wind speed data collected by Pathfinder during one of its recent missions

Chicago Public Schools
Lessons for days 166 to 168 deal with scattergrams and related topics.

Linear Regressions
This is a good lesson on finding regression lines by hand.  Error is evaluated by sums of squares of error but the lesson can be extended to include r value.

Linear and Exponential Regression
This relatively advanced lesson examines finding regression lines by hand. The formula for the r value is given.

Resources:

Interactive Utility for Regressions
This site contains an online tutorial for reducing matrices. It includes a row-reducing program for the TI-82/83 and row-reducing excel spreadsheets.

Scatterplot Guessing Game
This is a game that displays random scatterplots. Students match 4 of them to their correlation coefficient.

Scatterplots
Interactive lessons on midpoint and distance on the Cartesian coordinate plane, including a java applet that does scatterplots and linear regressions.

QELP
This website is full of different data sets, including linear sets. The data is very clean and easy to use. Download data sets in Excel or Minitab format and add regressions using Excel or use the data for calculator activities.

A Functional Housing Market
Students will access the Internet to search for housing prices in Houston, Texas (the location can be changed to accommodate any location) and compare the prices to the number of square feet.

Time Series Data- Most Subjects
This is a massive collection of time-series data sorted by topic. Excel is helpful in managing the sometimes hundreds of data points. All are actual data.

Great data sets that range from linear to logistic.
