  • Solving matrix equations
  • Using augmented matrices

Lesson Plans

Making Connections: Matrices, Graphs, and Linear Systems
Students will use graphing calculators to solve systems of linear equations in two ways. They will solve systems of equations by writing related matrices and solving by using inverse matrices.

Matrices at the Speed of Light!
Students will demonstrate their ability to write matrix equations and correlate matrices to systems of equations and multiplying polynomials. Extensions include coding and Markov chains.

Videobusters
Students will utilize fundamental properties of matrix arithmetic to solve real-world situations. They will also integrate prior knowledge of matrices with TI-83 graphing calculators.

Chicago Public Schools
This is a collection of structured daily lesson plans that covers matrices. It includes activities and assessments.

Acid Rain Simulation
The student will use the Monte Carlo method for modeling an acid rain simulation and its effect of the environment.

Meadows or Malls? (Using Matrices to Solve Systems)
This lesson from PBS involves a very rich problem to be solved with matrices.  There is an accompanying online video.

Resources:

Interactive Utility for Matrices
This site contains an online tutorial for reducing matrices. It includes a row-reducing program for the TI-82/83 and row-reducing excel spreadsheets.

PowerPoint Lesson Plan
PowerPoint lesson on Gaussian Elimination. It is very thorough and provides good examples. Go chapter 10 and download the zip files.

Go Directly to Jail!
An application of Markov chains with Monopoly.

History of Math Archives
The history of the determinant

Monopoly through the Eyes of Mathematics
This is a site that combines probability with matrices to show the long term probabilities of landing on each spot on the Monopoly board. This simulation rolls the dice as many times as you want and shows the probabilities.

Equations to Determinants
This lesson shows the development of the matrix solution for 2 equations in 2 variables.
