Algebraic Connections
Std 1: Use algebraic and geometric techniques to make financial and economic decisions, including those involving banking and investments, insurance, personal budgets, credit purchases, recreation, and deceptive and fraudulent pricing and advertising.

Examples:   banking—determining the best choice of certificates of deposit, savings accounts, checking accounts, or loans; credit purchases—comparing the costs of fixed- or variable-rate mortgage loans, comparing the costs associated with various credit cards; personal budgets—determining the best plan for long distance phone service

  • Generating, manually or with technological tools, graphs and tables related to personal finance and economics

Example: using computer software to create an amortization table for a mortgage loan or a circle graph for a personal budget
 


Lesson Plans

Buy vs. Lease
In this lesson students compare buying verses leasing an automobile.

Create a Budget
Students create a budget and examine the cost of living.

Circle Graphs
This is the How, What, and Why of building circle graphs, an interactive java applet that allows students to enter categories and values and watch the circle graph appear.

Pie Chart
Construct an interactive Pie chart with an explanation of the percentages involved.

Tax Structure
USA Today presents information on the number of tax cheaters. This is followed by an activity in which students explore the cost and feasibility of a flat tax.

Smart Shopping
Identify common advertising techniques and make smart choices to avoid deceptive and fraudulent advertising.

Wise Use of Credit
This site has definitions and regulations for the most common types of credit agreements. Sample balance + interest rate scenarios are given the educate consumers on the appropriate choices concerning credit.
