Example: Determining the cost needed to maximize profit

Lesson Plans

Maximum Area
Lesson plan including instruction and practice problems for applying quadratic equations to rectangular area problems.

Chicago Public Schools
This is a structured lesson that comes with activities, worksheets, and assessments (Day 96-97).

Chicago Public Schools
This is a structured lesson plan that provides strategies for teaching, examples, worksheets, and assessments. (Day 123-124)

Highs and Lows
This unit teaches students to use the TI-83 to find the relative extrema of a function. The students will be able to determine extrema by using a graph, a table, and the values of the derivative. The lesson can be done at several levels.

Building Boxes (Polynomial and Rational Functions)
In this lesson, students investigate rational and polynomial functions. Students determine the maximum volume of a box. It has a video of the lesson available online for the teacher.

Resources:

Minimums and Maximums
This site gives explicit instructions on how to find the minimum and maximum of a function using the TI calculator.

Rabbits and Wolves
This is a java applet that shows graphs of the population percentages as species compete for resources. Students can interpret the graph as they compete.
