Grade 1, Math
Std 1:  Demonstrate concepts of number sense by counting forward and backward by ones, twos, fives, and tens up to 100; counting forward and backward from an initial number other than 1; and using multiple representations for a given number.
  • Identifying position using the ordinal numbers 1st through 10th
  • Using vocabulary, including the terms equal, all, and none, to identify sets of objects
  • Recognizing that the quantity remains the same when the spatial arrangement changes
  • Determining the value of the digit in the ones place and the value of the digit in the tens place in a numeral
  • Determining the value of a number given the number of tens and ones
    Example:  one ten and four ones = 14
  • Determining the value of a number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given number
  • Determining the monetary value of individual coins and sets of like coins up to $1.00

How Many Ways Can You Count?
This lesson reviews how to count by ones, twos, fives, and tens using a number chart.  Includes printable chart and a teacher checklist. 

Follow My Lead: 1,2,3...
This activity can be used to conclude a unit on place value. Students use foot patterns to make a path down a hallway, from 1 to 100.

Place Value with "17 Kings and 42 Elephants"
Students will be able to use pictures to represent 2-digit numbers.

Tens and Ones
This lesson will teach students how to determine the number of tens and ones in a given number.

My Own PVC
Students work as a total group with manipulatives  for a clearer understanding of place value.

Exploring Pennies and Dimes
In this lesson children examine pennies and dimes and model subtraction as they listen to a children’s book. They model amounts to 60 cents with coins. They rub coins and make a chart comparing the two coins. At the conclusion of the lesson, they begin a word wall and make an entry in their portfolios. A Science extension is suggested.

Counting Money <$1.00
Students will identify and count money. Reproducible materials are included.

Counting money - Count Coins
Students will identify and count coins.

How Much for Your Name?
The children will create different coin combinations for a single amount.

50 State Quarter Game
Using their knowledge of place value and number sense, students can play a counting game to see who will earn 50 cents.

What Is It?
Compare and Order Whole Numbers to 100.

Ways to Make ??? Cents
Students will use coins to discover many possible ways to make a specified amount.

Counting Money Practice Lesson
This lesson contains hands-on classroom exercises to help students improve their counting money and identification skills with coins and/or bills.

Pumpkin, Pumpkin
This lesson includes ideas for place value counting, estimation, measurement, and enjoying the seeds.

Learning to Use Money
The students will learn the value of each coin and bill and be able to combine them in different ways. They will learn how to combine coins and bills to pay for purchases and also how to calculate change.  Uses a Java Applet to online activities.
