Grade 1, Math
Std 6: Solve problems using the identity and commutative properties of addition.

Lesson Plans:

Do It With Dominos
Nine lessons in which students explore the four models of addition (counting, sets, number line, and balanced equations), learn about the order property, the relation between addition and subtraction, and the result of adding 0.

Domino Shuffle
After reviewing the commutative property, students will use manipulatives and dominoes to participate in a variety of activities.

Goldfish...Are Fish That Are Gold!
Students will explore the concept of commutative property of addition with Goldfish crackers.

Add It Up
Students will explore the property of zero in addition and use cards to create individual addition problems.

Nothing To It!
Students will explore the zero property of addition and subtraction through the creation of a class book.  An assessment sheet is included.

Switch Around
Students will learn that for every addition fact there is a second fact with the same answer by using the "Switch Around."  Students will learn the term "commutative property of addition."

Students Switch
Students will review the commutative property of addition.

Commutative Car Ride
Students will explore the commutative property in addition through a real-life experience of riding in the front seat or back seat of a car.  Students will be able to move people around to show the different number sentences that have the same sum.

Commutative Property Equations
Students will learn and use the commutative property in addition equations.

Lima Bean Math
Students shake and pour lima beans to see how many combinations of beans add up to 10 and how many times certain combinations of beans occurs.

Nothing To It!
Students will explore the zero property of addition and subtraction through the creation of a class book.

Buzzing Math Facts!
Addition and subtraction facts will be used in a math bee.  Students may use many strategies to independently solve addition and subtraction math facts.
