Grade 1, Math
Std 8:  Differentiate among plane shapes, including circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles.
  • Describing similarities and differences between plane and solid shapes
         Examples: round, flat, curved, straight
  • Transferring shape combinations from one representation (dimension) to another
Examples:  making a particular grouping of blocks by using a drawing
of the grouping, making a drawing of a specific
                           arrangement of blocks
  • Recognizing real-life examples of line symmetry
Example:  recognizing a line of symmetry in a piece of folded paper or
                         an orange cut in half
  • Changing the position of objects or shapes by sliding (translation) and turning (rotation)
  • Combining shapes to fill in the area of a given shape
Example: covering a rectangle with two triangles

Lesson Plans:

Shouting Shapes!
Students will review plane figures and then participate in a shape Bingo game.  Students will then complete an assessment in which they will have to color the shapes according to directions.

Simple Symmetry
Students will be introduced to simple symmetry and will be shown a variety of objects that have lines of symmetry. Students will then complete a worksheet to prove mastery.

Block It
Students will use problem solving strategies and mental mathematics to look for patterns and decide on the placement of pattern blocks.

Every Day Shapes
After listening to the book, Circles, Triangles and Squares by Tana Hoban, students will use objects in the classroom to name shapes.

I Spy Shapes
After reviewing basic shapes, students will play the game "I Spy" in order to find items that contain the given shapes.  Students will then look through magazines to find real-life images that contain the shapes discussed and create a mural.

Greedy Triangle Unit
This lesson introduces students to geometric shapes in an entertaining book by Marilyn Burns, The Greedy Triangle.

Shape A Castle
Students will learn to identify squares, circles triangles, and rectangles.  They will then use these flat shapes to create castles out of construction paper.

Resources:

Cover the Triangle
Students use specific shapes in different ways to fill in the area of a certain size triangle.

Shape Finder
This site offers a simple shape identification game that may be used to reinforce students' knowledge of basic geometric figures.

Shape Sorter
Click on the buttons to reveal the pictures of different shapes. Match all of the shapes to win.
