Grade 2, Math
Std 1: Demonstrate concepts of number sense by using multiple representations of whole numbers up 1000, counting forward and backward by threes from a given number, identifying a number that is 100 more or 100 less than a given number, and differentiating between odd and even numbers.
     Examples:  251, two hundred fifty-one, 200 + 50 + 1
  • Identifying position using ordinal numbers to 100th
  • Determining the value of a digit in the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place
  • Determining the value of a number expressed in expanded notation
         Example:   700 + 70 + 3 = 773

Lesson Plans:

Ordinal Numbers
Students will determine ordinal numbers through twentieth.

Pass the Paper
Students will practice skip counting while cooperating in a group activity.

I Am The Greatest
This lesson will provide students highly motivating drill and practice with place value.  Students will be able to explain that the value of a number increases when the digits farthest to the left have the greatest value.

Popcorn Anyone?
Students will be able to write and say numerals up to 999.

Places, Places, Places
Students will identify numerals in the ones, tens, or hundreds place.

Three's Company
Students will use concrete models, expanded form, and standard form to show an understanding of numbers.

Place Value with "17 Kings and 42 Elephants"
Students will be able to use pictures to represent 2-digit numbers.

Reinforcement Lesson in Place Value
The purpose of this lesson is to build the students knowledge of place value utilizing a more hands on "thinking approach."  This is a lesson in place value that never fails to build excitement and generates groans of disapproval when it is time to quit. The level of difficulty can be varied based on the grade level and time of year.
