Grade 2, Math
Std 2: Apply the operations of addition and subtraction to solve problems involving two-digit numerals, using multiple strategies with and without regrouping.
Example:  using concrete objects, mental calculations, or paper-and-

pencil activities
  • Demonstrating computational fluency for basic addition and subtraction facts with sums through 18 and differences with minuends through 18, using horizontal and vertical forms
  • Oval: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Interpreting multiplication as repeated addition and division as equal groupings
       Examples:  3 x 5 = 5 + 5 + 5                      +
           +

                                  20 ÷ 4 = 5

  • Solving multi-step addition and subtraction problems originating from real-life experiences
Example:  There were 5 students on the bus after the first stop.  Three
students got on at the second stop.  The bus made one more stop
before arriving at school.  When the bus arrived at school, 18 students
got off.  How many students got on at the last stop?
  • Justifying the strategy used to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • Using an estimate to determine if an answer is reasonable

Lesson Plans:

Relay Adding
Students will learn how to play a relay game to practice two-digit addition without regrouping.

Review Addition
Students will play a bingo game and complete a worksheet to review two-digit addition without regrouping.

Two-Digit Addition
Students will use manipulatives to show addition without regrouping.

Two-Digit Addition Assessment
A whole group lesson created for student assessment on two-digit addition without regrouping.

Easy Addition
This lesson gives students an alternative way of adding if they are having trouble with 'carrying' and is faster and more accurate than other methods.  Upon completion of this lesson, the students will be able to add quickly and correctly using this alternative method.

Do It With Dominoes
Students will explore the four models of addition (counting, sets, number line, and balanced equations) using dominoes.    They also learn about the order property, the relation between addition and subtraction, and the result of adding 0.  (A nine lesson unit.)

Literature/Math Crossover
I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today!  Students will create story problems based on this Dr. Seuss book.

Math Through Literature
The students will be able to complete and create addition and subtracton facts up to 20 using the illustrative book Counting Wildflowers by Bruce McMillan.

Hundred Blocks Board
In this lesson students will practice adding, subtracting, and multiplying without regrouping using a hundred blocks board. Students will be given opportunities to identify and discuss different patterns that they discover and relate number patterns to visual patterns.
