Grade 2, Math
Std 5:  Create growing patterns.
      Examples:  ف  ف
ف  ,ف  ف  ,ف  ; ab, aab, aaab

Lesson Plans:

Patterns Here, There, And Everywhere!
A cross-curricular unit involving all subject areas in which the students will demonstrate an understanding of numbers, patterns, counting and operations.

The Magic Box
Students will recognize, describe, create, and extend repeating and arithmetic patterns.

Pattern Play
Students will create their own number patterns and reinforce their understanding of the concept of patterns.

Kite Patterns
Students will extend patterns used on a kite and create patterns to make a necklace.

Creating a Class Pattern Book with Popular Culture Characters
During this lesson, students read and become familiar with a pattern book and then create a digital pattern book using photographs of popular culture characters. Students bring in their favorite popular culture characters in the form of stuffed animals or toys and the teacher takes digital photographs of the characters in various locations around the school. Once the photographs have been stored on a computer, students participate in a shared writing session to create their digital storybook, which follows the pattern of the book they read at the start of the lesson.

Patterns That Grow
Students use logical thinking to create, identify, extend, and translate patterns. They make patterns with numbers and shapes and explore patterns in a variety of mathematical contexts. These lessons give students an opportunity to create and analyze numeric and geometric patterns. Particular emphasis will be placed on growing patterns.

Resources:

Analyzing Patterns

An interactive website for creating, comparing, and viewing multiple repetitions of pattern units.

Displaying Number Patterns
Learning about number relationships and properties of numbers using calculators and hundred boards.

Color Pattern
Students will complete the pattern, check answer, and select new problem.

Algebra Patterns and Functions
Scroll down the page to the "Algebra Patterns and Functions" section for activities to reinforce patterning skills.
