Grade 2, Math
Std 7:  Describe change over time in observable (qualitative) and measurable
           (quantitative) terms.

Examples:  recognizing that a plant grew taller (qualitative, requiring observation); recognizing that a plant grew three inches (quantitative, requiring measurement)

Lesson Plans:

Growing Up
Students will use baby pictures and more current pictures to  record the physical changes that they have gone through since they were babies.

The Beanstalk and Me
Students will measure plants and grow their own beanstalks.

Backyard Jungle:  Nature Journaling
Students will identify and observe a natural subject and record relevant observations about the subject, such as date, time, weather, cloud pattern, sounds, smells and location.

How Does Our Garden Grow?
Students will observe and describe plant parts as they grow and change.  This is actually a science lesson on plant growth and development but can be used to teach this math standard.

It Counts
This lesson is designed to help students understand and reinforce how numbers are assigned to objects, as well as encourage them to think about more, less, or equal values. In the lesson, students are asked to describe, compare, and classify plants. Students should be able to use numbers concretely and descriptively to count as they make specific observations about plants.  This may be used as a science and/or math lesson.

Resources:

Plant Journal
In this lesson students make and record observations of plant growth.

Measure the Teddy Bears
This interactive game teaches measurement.  An animation will play when students get the correct answer.

Bean Growth Experiment Project
Students will plant bean seeds, then record, graph, and compare growth.
