Grade 2, Math
Std 11: Estimate weight and capacity by making comparisons with familiar objects.
Examples: a desk weighing more than a pencil, a cup holding less than a bucket

Lesson Plans:

Bitty, Bigger, and Bouncy Balls

Students will make and test predictions about the weight of various size balls.

A Pound of Good Measurement

Students will use various tools to correctly measure different items.

The Long and Short of It
Students will determine the more efficient unit of measurement for various items.

Sampling Rocks
The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn about sampling through an investigation of rocks found in the schoolyard. In this lesson, students collect and analyze a sampling of rocks from the schoolyard. They sort the collected rocks by characteristics such as size, weight, and color, to see if any generalizations can be made about the types of rocks that can be found in the schoolyard.

Magnificent Measurement:  The Weight of Things
This lesson introduces and provides practice with the measurable attributes of weight.  It also gives an opportunity to assess student knowledge of and skill in using measurement of mass.  This learning experience focuses students’ attention on the attributes of weight using hands-on activities and active learning.

Resources:

Capacity Song
Students will be able to identify all equivalent measurements of capacity by singing this song each day.

U. S. Volumes
An online activity for converting volume units.

Surface, Area, and Volume
Online activity for finding area and volume.

Conceptualizing Volume
