Grade 3, Math
Std 1:
Demonstrate number sense by comparing, ordering, and expanding whole numbers through 9999.
  • Comparing numbers using the symbols >, <, =, ≠
  • Identifying the place value of any digit within a four-digit number
  • Writing a four-digit number in words and locating it on a number line
  • Determining the value of a number written in expanded notation to the ten-thousands place Example: 3,000 + 400 + 20 + 1 = 3,421
  • Rounding whole numbers to the nearest ten and hundred and money values to the nearest dollar

Lesson Plans:

What's Your Number?
Students use personal numbers to compare and order, while getting to know more about each other. Check the extended activity for an online resource.

I Am The Greatest
This lesson will provide students highly motivating drill and practice with place value.  Students will be able to explain that the value of a number increases when the digits farthest to the left have the greatest value.

Placing the Value on Digits
Students will understand that the position of a digit in a number determines it value.

Expanded Notation Number Roll
Students will write numbers in expanded form and in words.  Reproducible materials included.

Grocery Store Grab
Students will learn to use estimation strategies to estimate the amount of money they are spending at the "grocery store" in this small group game.

Integrating Math into a Spring Thematic Unit
Students will work with the concepts of number relationships, reasoning, estimation, measurement, computation, and creating patterns.

Place Value Prowl
Students will identify the place value for a given digit in numbers through 999,999.

Place Value Roll
Students will identify place value for a given digit in numbers through 999,999 and determines the effect that changing a given digit will have on the value of the number.

Millions Upon Millions!
Students will identify different names for numbers through 999,999 (e.g., standard form, word name, expanded notation, or rational form).

Place Value
Students will identify the place value of the individual digits within a number.

Blast Off With Rounding
Assesses the student's ability to round numbers up to and including one billion by having them make a list of items they would take with them on a trip to space.

Waltzing Through Numbers
(Scroll down the page to Mathematics → Numbers and Number Sense → Waltzing Through Numbers)
Students will expand their number sense through this introductory math unit (7 lessons) covering place value, even and odd numbers, patterns, skip counting, and expanded form of notation.  Includes integrated literature based math lessons.

Greater Than/Less Than
Students will demonstrate the concept of greater than less than.  Each student will use cookies to construct sets, prepare greater than less than illustrations and solve simple greater than less than problems.

Place Value - 100's & 1,000's
Students will identify the value of numbers in the hundreds and thousands place and recognize zero as a placeholder.

Anthill Number Round-Off
Students will estimate by rounding off numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 by visually placing the number on an anthill.

Resources:

Can You Say Really Big Numbers
Students type in numbers and the computer writes it.

Mystery Picture
Students will match correct number words with numbers.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.

Frog Palace
Master the skills involved in using decimal places to complete transactions as you help some frogs to purchase precious stones for their king!
