Grade 3, Math
Std 7: Complete a given numeric or geometric pattern.
Examples: geometric pattern--- ∆ □ ∆ ∆ □ ∆ ∆ __ □
                  numeric pattern-- 20, 27, 34, 41, __

Lesson Plans:

Strange Elevators: Creating and Extending Patterns
Students will recognize and create a number pattern.

Pattern Play
Students will create their own number patterns and reinforce their understanding of the concept of patterns.

Anno's Magic Seeds
Students will practice the use of patterns, expand given patterns, and write equations to match the pattern given.

How Many Snails?
Students will represent algebraic patterns in various ways.  Note:  This lesson is designed for grades 6-8 but can easily be adapted to fit 3rd grade.

The King's Chessboard
Students will work with patterns, doubling, estimation, and number sense.

Mitten Math
Pre-number concepts of classification, seriation, and patterning are used in this lesson to reinforce shapes and patterns to children. Students use felt shapes to create patterns on felt mittens.

Snake Patterns-s-s-s
Students will use given rules to generate several stages of a pattern and will be able to predict the outcome for any stage.

Patterns That Grow
Students use logical thinking to create, identify, extend, and translate patterns with numbers and shapes. This is a 5-lesson unit.

What Comes Nex_?
This lesson deals with patterns and the importance of looking at data from more than a single perspective.

Resources:

Tessellation Town on Tile Island
An online activity where students create patterns using geometric shapes.

Cyber-Pattern Player
Students will create visual and musical patterns.

Pattern Quest
Students will use clues to solve this pattern game.

Crack Hacker's Safe
Students will solve the patterns to open Hacker's safe.

AAA Math Third Grade
Utilize the section Sequences and Patterns for online activities to support this standard.

What Comes Next?
An online patterning activity.

Stars or Hearts?
An online patterning activity.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.
