Grade 3, Math
Std 9:
Specify locations on a coordinate grid by using horizontal and vertical movements.

Lesson Plans:

Grid-Room
Students solve riddles and locate the coordinates of the "clues" on a large grid set up in a room or hall.

Grid Connections
Students will learn how to read and locate information on a grid using grid paper. By the use of their grids, they will answer given questions for accuracy.

Pirate Joe's Treasure Hunt
Students will be able to identify the (x,y) coordinates of specific points on a graph.

If You Hopped Like a Frog
Students will make and analyze a coordinate graph.

Step Right Up!
Students will learn to name an ordered pair for a point and plot positions named by an ordered pair on a large grid located on the classroom floor.

Tabletop Grids
Students will play a game in small groups using large grids to develop skill in locating and naming points on grid maps.

Human Coordinate Graph
Students will actively learn how to plot ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.  They will also learn how to connect ordered pairs to graph a picture.  This lesson is designed for 6th grade but can easily be adapted for a lower grade.

You Sank My Battleship
Students will learn how to plot ordered pairs using the coordinate plane and determine in which quadrant these ordered pairs lie.  Students will show mastery of plotting ordered pairs by playing "Battleship".

Finding Nemo
Students will use ordered pairs to identify and locate points on a grid.  Students will think which direction they head to find the points on the grid where Nemo is hiding.

Coordinate Grids
Students will identify points on a coordinate grid and write about the grid.

Flight Coordinates
Students will take on the role as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and must use coordinates (ordered pairs & coordinate grids) to locate U.S. carriers and Egyptian ships.

Searching for Spelling Words
Students will participate in a real-life experience to identify and apply ordered pairs on a coordinate grid.  This lesson should be used as a precursor to teaching about ordered pairs on a coordinate grid.

An Introduction to the Coordinate Plane
A Web unit that introduces the coordinate plane, for elementary and middle school students. With the help of Sam the Chameleon, learn to find points on a number line and graph points in the coordinate plane.

Plane History
What is the history of the coordinate plane?  Was it invented?  Who named it?  Sam the chameleon helps students investigate the history of the coordinate plane.

Resources:

Using Grids
Students will understand how a grid helps to locate areas on a map.

Math Cats Explore the Multiplication Table
Students will compare areas on the multiplication grid.

What's the Point?
An online interactive resource where students will select correct points on a grid.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.
