Grade 3, Math
Std 10:
Measure length in metric units.

Lesson Plans:

Integrating Math into a Spring Thematic Unit
Students will work with the concepts of number relationships, reasoning, estimation, measurement, computation, and creating patterns.

Cool to Rule: A Game of Estimation and Measurement
This activity provides an excellent opportunity for students to review measurement and estimation skills while having fun at the same time.

If You Hopped Like a Frog
Students will make and analyze a coordinate graph.

How Tall, How Short, How Faraway
Students will be able to list in journal what "measurement" is. As a group, will measure with standard and non-standard units and record data on class chart. Students will be able to construct a meter tape.

Smile Metric Style.
Students will practice working with the metric system.

Don't Tell the Principal--But There's a Whale in the Parking Lot!
After completion of this unit, students will be able to graph lengths of whales, create accurate depictions of various whales on posters, estimate and predict the lengths of whales using various measurement tools and participate in the painting of a "blue whale" on the school parking lot.

Let's Measure!
Through this extensive study of measurement students will gain a better understanding of linear measurement, weight (mass), and capacity.

Resources:

Math Cats Convert Numbers!
Students are able to observe length, weight, and volume measurements being converted from standard units to metric and vice versa.

AAA Math Third Grade
Use the section Measurement - Metric for online activities to support this standard.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.

Length
Activities to develop an understanding of the use of different measurement units and to develop an appreciation of the need for a common unit.
