  • Identifying a number when given a pictorial representation of tenths and hundredths or groups of ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands
  • Writing a number in expanded notation through the hundred-thousands    Example:  914,682 = 900,000 + 10,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 80 + 2
  • Determining the place value of a digit in a whole number through the hundred-thousands and in a decimal to the hundredths

Lesson Plans:

Place Value Population
Students will use rounding and estimation with large numbers.

Exploring Addition Patterns
Students will learn and use addition patterns to find sums.

I Am The Greatest
This lesson will provide students highly motivating drill and practice with place value.  Students will be able to explain that the value of a number increases when the digits farthest to the left have the greatest value.

Place Value Prowl
Students will identify the place value for a given digit in numbers through 999,999.

Place Value Roll
Students will identify place value for a given digit in numbers through 999,999 and determines the effect that changing a given digit will have on the value of the number.

Millions Upon Millions!
Students will identify different names for numbers through 999,999 (e.g., standard form, word name, expanded notation, or rational form).

Human Decimal Activity
Students will use models and pictures to demonstrate the value of decimal numerals with tenths and hundredths.

Decimal Numbers
Students will demonstrate an understanding of decimal numbers.

So That's What It Means!  (Finding Parts of a Million)
Students will learn an easy way to remember the value of 1/4 million, 1/2 million, and 3/4 million by relating it to quarters and a dollar and will be able to write numbers in numerical and word form.

Place Value
Students will identify the place value of a number with seven digits. Students will play a game similar to a ring toss to express numbers through the millions place.

Fraction Frenzy
(Scroll down to Mathematics → Fractions & Decimals → Fraction Frenzy)
The objective of this mathematics unit is to concretely develop basic concepts of fractions and decimals.  Writing, comparing, and constructing fractions, as well as decimals, are among the primary focal points in this 6 lesson unit.

Place Value - 100's & 1,000's
Students will identify the value of numbers in the hundreds and thousands place and recognize zero as a placeholder.
