| Lesson Plans:
The Great
Turkey Walk
Students will formulate questions that can be addressed with data and
collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them. They will
create bar graphs and pie graphs. Students can also use map grids to
find the travel route of the turkeys.
Battleship--Graphing Ordered Pairs
Students will identify the ordered pair for a point and locate the
point for an ordered pair in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane.
Over and Up!
Students will use ordered pairs of numbers to locate points on a grid
or map and determine the ordered pair for a given point.
You Sank My
Battleship
Students will learn how to plot ordered pairs using the coordinate plane
and determine in which quadrant these ordered pairs lie. Students
will show mastery of plotting ordered pairs by playing "Battleship".
Finding Nemo
Students will use ordered pairs to identify and locate points on a
grid. Students will think which direction they head to find the
points on the grid where Nemo is hiding.
Human
Coordinate Graph
Students will actively learn how to plot ordered pairs on a coordinate
plane. They will also learn how to connect ordered pairs to graph
a picture. This lesson is designed for 6th grade but can easily be
adapted for a lower grade.
Tabletop Grids
Students will play a game in small groups using large grids to develop
skill in locating and naming points on grid maps.
Step
Right Up!
Students will learn to name an ordered pair for a point and plot
positions named by an ordered pair on a large grid located on the
classroom floor.
Flight Coordinates
Students will take on the role as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and
must use coordinates (ordered pairs & coordinate grids) to locate U.S.
carriers and Egyptian ships.
Searching for Spelling Words
Students will participate in a real-life experience to identify and
apply ordered pairs on a coordinate grid. This lesson should be
used as a precursor to teaching about ordered pairs on a coordinate
grid.
An Introduction to the
Coordinate Plane
A Web unit that introduces the coordinate plane, for elementary and
middle school students. With the help of Sam the Chameleon, learn to
find points on a number line and graph points in the coordinate plane.
Plane History
What is the history of the coordinate plane? Was it invented?
Who named it? Sam the chameleon helps students investigate the
history of the coordinate plane.
