Grade 4, Math
Std 14:
Measure length, width, weight, and capacity, using metric and customary units, and temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius.
  • Estimating perimeter and area of irregular shapes using unit squares and
    grid paper
  • Estimating area using unit squares

Lesson Plans:

Plane Capacity
Students will solve problems related to the capacity of an airplane.

Runways & Take Off
Students will be able to interpret word problems to figure out how to solve a problem.

A Liter Bit of This and an Ounce of That
(Scroll down to Science → Chemistry → A Liter Bit of This and an Ounce of That)
Seven lessons using customary and metric measurements.

Adventures in Statistics
A mathematics project involving students and the area of classrooms, which incorporates measurement, graphing, computation, data analysis, and presentation of results.

Cool to Rule
A Game of Estimation and Measurement.  This activity provides an excellent opportunity for students to review measurement and estimation skills while having fun at the same time.

Learning Measurement
In this lesson, students will understand the attribute of length, develop a process of measuring, understand concepts related to units of measure, use estimating to measure, and learn how to use these processes in everyday life.

How Tall, How Short, How Faraway
Students will be able to list in journal what "measurement" is. As a group, will measure with standard and non-standard units and record data on class chart. Students will be able to construct a meter tape.

Measuring Penny
Students will increase awareness of the variety of ways available to measure.

Collecting The Rays
In this lesson, students explore how variations in solar collectors affect the energy absorbed. They make rectangular prisms that have the same volume but different linear dimensions. Students investigate relationships among the linear dimensions, the area, and the volume of rectangular prisms.

Don't Tell the Principal--But There's a Whale in the Parking Lot!
After completion of this unit, students will be able to graph lengths of whales, create accurate depictions of various whales on posters, estimate and predict the lengths of whales using various measurement tools and participate in the painting of a "blue whale" on the school parking lot.

Jump! Jump!
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of how to take an accurate measurement to the nearest inch and how to add, multiply and divide numbers to find averages.  Students will also construct a chart/table to record their results.  Additionally students will apply knowledge of topic sentences and detail sentences to write a paragraph explaining how they arrived at their results.

Flying Into Spring
Students use measurement and geometry to design a kite for spring.

Bubble & Squeak
(Scroll down to Mathematics → Measurement → Bubble & Squeak)
This 4 lesson unit is designed to provide students a unique, interactive, and historical approach to the mathematical concepts of measurement and fractions.

Exploring Area
The focus of this ten-day unit is to introduce the geometric concept of area by combining literature with the use of two different manipulatives:  square tiles and tangrams.

Let's Measure!
Through this extensive study of measurement students will gain a better understanding of linear measurement, weight (mass), and capacity.

Perimeter
Calculate perimeter using iteration with nonstandard units of measurement.

Temperature (Celsius)
Students will work with Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, solve Celsius and Fahrenheit conversion problems, convert temperatures to Celsius.

Weight - Ounces/Pounds
Students will select appropriate units for measuring and solving problems in customary systems, identify equivalent measures within a measurement system, and estimate, determine, record, and discuss weight using appropriate customary measuring tools and units.
Includes a PowerPoint on Capacity.

Capacity (Pints & Quarts)
The students will identify and compare pints and quarts.  Includes a PowerPoint on Capacity.

Area
Students will learn how to find the area of a rectangle by using square units.  Includes a PowerPoint on Area & Perimeter.

Capacity (Gallon, Quart, Pint, Cup)
The purpose of this lesson is to help students identify customary units for measuring.  Students will identify gallons, quarts, pints, and cups and discover that differently shaped containers can hold the same amount.  Students will compare gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.
