Grade 5, Math
Std 5:  Identify numbers less than zero by extending the number line.

Example:  Identifying negative temperatures (below 0°) on a thermometer

Lesson Plans:

Signed Integers
Students will identify numbers less than zero by extending the number line.

Number Line Game
This game reinforces number line concepts and the addition of positive and negative integers.

Negative & Positive Numbers
Students will be able to recognize positive and negative numbers on a thermometer and on a graph, and also perform mathematical functions using positive and negative numbers.

Integers in the Weather
The student will investigate positive and negative integers on the number line and identify opposites of integers. Beginning with real-world measurements in the classroom, the students will then plot integers on graph paper, and finally enter them into a computer spreadsheet. Weather data will be collected from the Weather.com Web site. Using this data, the students will identify integers representing high and low temperatures.

Resources:

Line Jumper
Online practice with positive and negative numbers.

Introduction to Integers
Students will identify and define integers.

Cyberchase- Space Coupe to the Rescue
Online practice with positive and negative numbers.

Positive and Negatives on the Number Line

Placing Negative Numbers on a Number Line
Students will use real-life applications to illustrate negative numbers.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.
