Grade 5, Math
Std 6:  Demonstrate the commutative, associative, and identity properties of addition and multiplication of whole numbers.

Lesson Plans:

Grapes of Math
Students will practice mental addition and will use the associative and commutative properties of addition to solve problems.

Multiplication & Division with Arrays
Students will work with the fact families using the commutative property.

Domino Addition
Students will use properties of addition and multiplication including commutative, associative, and properties of zero and one.

Property Line
Students use calculators to solve addition equations while learning the properties of addition.

Concentrate
This lesson is intended for use as review after addition properties have been taught.  Students will identify the addition property being used in a given math equation.

Proper Properties!
This lesson teaches students to use the properties of addition to help find sums.

Switching Places
This lesson is an interactive lesson which helps students learn to use and identify the four properties of multiplication.

Re-Discovering the Properties of Multiplication
Students review the various properties of multiplication and use them to help solve math problems.

Rediscovering the Properties of Multiplication using the Internet
Students will review properties of multiplication on the Internet and play an online game.

The Commutative Property Using Arrays
Each student will complete a multiplication array demonstrating the commutative property and present it to the class.

Resources:

Properties of Addition
Students will practice identification of the properties of addition.

Properties of Multiplication
Students will practice identification of the properties of multiplication.

Inverse Relationship of Addition and Subtraction
Students will practice inverse operations.

Inverse relationship of Multiplication and Division
Students will practice inverse operations.

All About Arithmetic Properties
Interactive practice and challenge games

Properties of Integers
Explanations and examples

Properties of Real Numbers
Explanations and examples

Arrays and the Commutative Property

Anno's Magic Seeds
Students will practice the use of patterns, expand given patterns, and write equations to match the pattern given.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids by Jenny Eather
The Maths Dictionary is animated, interactive, and allows students to practice their math skills. Over 500 terms are explained in simple language. Click on "billion" and discover that you have 10 billion brain cells working for you right now. Roll your mouse over the world time zone chart and you instantly know the time for that part of the world. Every math teacher should bookmark this Web site.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives
Virtual manipulatives related to NCTM standards in the areas of Number & Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement,  and Data Analysis & Probability.  To access tools, click inside the grid on the cell that matches the grade level and standards area desired.

Figure This!
From NCTM:  Three to four math challenges using real world examples are posted here each month. For those who need help solving the challenge, there are hints and complete solutions, along with related problems.
