Grade 5, Math
Std 13:
Convert a larger unit of measurement to a smaller unit of measurement within the same system (customary or metric).
Examples: 4 cups = 32 fluid ounces; 2 meters = 200 centimeters; 2 miles = 10,560 feet

Lesson Plans:

Star Spangled Math
(Scroll down to Mathematics → Geometry → Star Spangled Math)
Eight cross-curricular lessons. Use lessons four and five for linear measurement.

Metric Measures and Conversions
Students will use a metric conversion stair chart to convert metric measurements.

Metric and English
Two Systems of Measurement.  In this lesson students will compare the Metric system of measurement to the English system.  The lesson deals with the failed probe to Mars, and how these systems of measurement were involved in that problem.

Metric Conversions
Students will compare and convert a given measurement to another unit within the same measurement system.

Metric Conversions
This game enables students to practice converting one unit of metric length to another unit of metric length and to interpret metric abbreviations.

Weight - Ounces/Pounds
Students will select appropriate units for measuring and solving problems in customary systems, identify equivalent measures within a measurement system, and estimate, determine, record, and discuss weight using appropriate customary measuring tools and units.
Includes a PowerPoint on Capacity.

Capacity (Pints & Quarts)
The students will identify and compare pints and quarts.  Includes a PowerPoint on Capacity.

Capacity (Gallon, Quart, Pint, Cup)
The purpose of this lesson is to help students identify customary units for measuring.  Students will identify gallons, quarts, pints, and cups and discover that differently shaped containers can hold the same amount.  Students will compare gallons, quarts, pints, and cups.
