| Lesson Plans:
PBS: Mix It Up!
In this teacher directed lesson, students will be introduced to
proportional reasoning through modeling, student sharing, and
questioning techniques.
PBS: How Many Noses Are in Your Arm?
Teacher directed lesson where students will apply the concept
of ratio and proportion to determine the length of the Statue of
Liberty's torch bearing arm.
The
Incredible, Edible Orange
Students investigate the proportional relationship between the
edible part of an orange and the peel or inedible part of an orange.
They will investigate different types of oranges such as navel, blood
and Clementine's to see if there is a common percentage of edible to
inedible.
Golden Ratios:
Student directed lesson on the golden ratio.
Fun With
Estimation:
Teacher lesson plan teaching students participate in a simulation game to purchase items based on
estimated costs without going over budget.
Would
You Rather Have...?
Teacher directed lesson plan allowing students to decide which would be worth more, their weight in pennies,
nickels, or dimes.
Scavenger Hunt for Lengths:
Students estimate and then measure the length of classroom objects.
All Those
Advertising Dollars!
After getting information from advertising statistics available on the
Internet, students will calculate percent increases for the top 25
companies in terms of advertising dollars spent during a year.
The
Winning Edge: Probability in Basketball
In this classroom activity, students will calculate percentages based
upon simulated performances of a statistically significant number of
discrete events.
Exquisite Excursions
This discovery lesson is designed to encompass several class
periods. Students will plan a trip to 6 world cities and use
their math skills to solve problems encountered along the way.
Photo-Math
Photo Math games were "designed to be used by slow learners, they were
also found exciting by all of my other students.
Learning About
Ratios: A Sandwich Study
This is a discovery type lesson where student use tangible objects to
study ratios.
Ratios,
Mars and the Internet
In this lesson students are involved in calculating real ratios that
exist between Earth and Mars.
Choice and Chance in Life - The Game of "Skunk":
In this teacher directed lesson, students will practice decision making skills leading
to a better understanding of choice versus chance and building the
foundation of mathematical probability.
The Great Race:
In this teacher directed lesson, students will construct charts to examine number patterns and use
these patterns to generate a graph of the situation.
This is a PDF file.
Lesson Plans Page - M&M Lab
In this lesson, students will practice computing and comparing
fractions and percents.
Academy Curricular Exchange - Fraction Conversion Bingo
Students will realize the relationships between fractions, decimals,
and percents.
Euclid - Fractions Equivalent Fractions and Decimals
The students, after a demonstration and explanation on number sense
for fraction and decimals, will be able to relate fractions to
decimals and find and compare equivalent fractions.
