Grade 6, Math
Std #5:
Plot coordinates on grids, graphs, and maps.
  • Identifying the coordinates of a point on the Cartesian plane
  • Comparing parallel and perpendicular lines

Lesson Plans:

These are the coordinates of your mouse!            X , Y

General Coordinates Game
This activity allows the user to plot points on the coordinate plane and to read the coordinates of a point plotted by the computer.  This activity would work well in groups of two or three for about fifteen to twenty minutes if you use the explorations questions and ten to fifteen minutes otherwise.

Locating Points Using Cartesian Coordinates
Teacher lesson plan focusing on plotting coordinate points and locating points.

Alien Hunt
To use the coordinate system to locate aliens hidden in a grid.

Rescue Mission Game
Students play a game to learn about the four forces of flight: lift, drag, thrust, and gravity.  Before playing the game, students conduct a probability experiment with spinners and record their results in tally tables and bar graphs.  They then use their findings to select spinners with the greatest probability of helping them win the game.  In a portion of the game, students use ordered pairs to plot points on a coordinate grid to show their flight path.

Find the Shape
Using ordered pairs to identify, locate, and plot points on the coordinate plane.

Learning About Location: Charting the Path of the George W. Elder
Students will plot a map with the coordinates of the port stops and places visited by the Harriman Expedition to Alaska in 1899.

Plotting Coordinates on a Geoboard
Students learn how to plot coordinates on a geoboard to find hidden figures.

Coordinate Graphing:
Students will become familiar with plotting and locating points on the coordinate plane.  Gives students the opportunity to practice plotting points with immediate feedback. Includes online graphing practice.

Mathematics of Cartography
Students will study the mathematics of maps by utilizing various online resources.  The lesson is designed so that students can work independently with guidance when needed from the teacher.

Graphing and the Coordinate Plane:
This lesson is designed to introduce students to graphing ordered pairs of numbers on the coordinate plane. Includes online activity.

Graphing Constellations:
A basic coordinate graphing activity to make diagrams of some well known constellations.

Graphing Leaves:
Students gather leaves and trace them on graph paper.  They plot the coordinates that approximate the shape of the leaves and share those coordinates as "worksheets for other students to complete.

Resources:

Explore Learning:  Construct Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
This is an interactive lesson.  Construct parallel and perpendicular lines using a straightedge and compass.  Use step-by-step explanations and feedback to develop understanding of the construction.

Funbrain - What's the Point?:
Interactive on-line activity graphing coordinates.

Illuminations:  What Are Perpendicular Lines?
Gives a definition of perpendicular lines and an interactive applet that allows students to maneuver a pair of lines.

Yahoo Education: Geometry
This site has lesson plans on Parallel Lines, Perpendicular Lines, Slopes, and Transversals and includes a tutor on each example.

Maths Is Fun
Short student paced lesson on perpendicular and parallel lines.  There are good visual examples for students.

Billy Bug and his all new quest for grub!
Interactive game where students are given a coordinate point and they must use arrows to put Billy Bug on the correct spot.  The game is timed and students can win best time!

Math for Morons Like Us
This is a great site for student clarification!  On this page, we hope to clear up problems that you might have with parallel lines and their uses in geometry.  Parallel lines seem rather innocent, but are used in some complex geometry situations to help you solve problems.

Aims@Kids Interactive Puzzles:
Hurkle!  An interactive Flash game focusing on plotting points.  Students can play against the computer or a friend - kids will love this site!

Quia: Math A - Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Interactive game for students to use when practicing with slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines.

Angle and Parallel Lines
Java applet that gives a visual to classroom instructions.  Students can use the applet to manipulate and explore this concept.

St. Louis Community College
Printable activity on parallel and perpendicular lines

Cartesian Coordinate System
Brief explanation of the Cartesian coordinate system and a Java graph explorer to see how the coordinates of a point vary as it is moved.

Cartesian Coordinates
Short lessons on 2-D Cartesian Coordinates and 3-D Cartesian Coordinates.
