Grade 6, Math
Std #7:
Solve problems involving perimeter and area of parallelograms and rectangles.
  • Estimating perimeter and area
  • Developing formulas to determine perimeter and area of parallelograms and rectangles

Lesson Plans:

ShoDor Education: Surface Area and Volume:
This lesson is designed to introduce students to surface area and volume.

ShoDor Education:  Length, Perimeter, and Area
This Lesson is designed to examine the mathematical concepts of length, perimeter, and area.  These activities and discussions may be used to develop students' understanding of these mathematical concepts.

PBS:  The Capacity of the Planets:
Using the formula for the volume of a sphere, students compare the capacities of the nine planets in our solar system.

Math Forum:  Building a Pyramid:
Students build a scale model and determine its volume.

Learning about Multiplication Using Dynamic Sketches of an Area Model
Using interactive figures, students can investigate how changing the height of a rectangle with a fixed width changes its area.

Learning about Length, Perimeter, Area and Volume of Similar Objects Using Interactive Figures:  Side Length and Area of Similar Figures
How are the perimeters, areas, and side lengths of similar rectangles related?

Patterns and Functions
Students will investigate properties of perimeter, area, and volume related to various geometric two- and three-dimensional shapes.

Measuring Circles:
This lesson allows students to measure many circles to try to discover if there is a relationship between circumference and diameter.

Funbrain: Find the Area:
This activity is a game format with several levels of difficulty.

Rectangle - Area, Perimeter, Length, and Width:
This applet is great for studying the relationships between perimeter and area and length and width of a rectangle.

Figure This:
Students decide which chocolate covered cookie they would like to eat based on the area of the cookie.

Area & Perimeter using Geoboards
Students will apply the concepts of length, area, and perimeter to real world experiences.

Determining Area and Perimeter
Students will learn to calculate the area and perimeter of a given geometric shape and apply it to a real life situation.

Figure This:
Students compare two patios that use the same number of patios stones but a different arrangements.

Shodor Education:  Perimeter:
Students examine the mathematical concepts of area and perimeter.

Resources:

Experiment with Volume:
Students hypothesize about, measure, and then calculate the volumes of two cylinders formed from the same size sheet of paper.

Math Forum: Find the Shape:
An informal investigation of area.

Dissected Squares:
To understand the relationship between area and perimeter in squares.

EduPlace:  Pi:
The geometry of circles is based on the ratio known as pi. Help your students learn how to use this fascinating number.

Math Goodies:  Area of a Circle:
Instruction and online practice. Includes vocabulary

Math Forum: Finding the Value of Pi:
This site explains how mathematicians have examined circles to determine the relationship between radius, diameter and circumference.

Fun Brain
Students will calculate the area or perimeter of a rectangle.  For each problem the student answers correctly, they will receive a piece of an archeological puzzle.

Tangrams:
Use tangrams to compute the area of polygons without formulas.
