| Lesson Plans:
A Closer Look: Unemployment
Analyze the effects of unemployment nationwide and locally, and
understand what it means to be unemployed and who makes up this
population. Use current data and local unemployment rates to
create graphs, publications and presentations.
Cross-Curricular: Math
Explore geographical locations and foreign or economic issues by
participating in statistical and economic activities on topics such
as the oil industry, calculations of when it may dry up and analysis
of population growth in Curitiba, Brazil.
Using Data
Collection to Create a Portrait of Your Town
Students are provided an outline of the Lynds' topics and methods
used in the best-selling Middletown. Students then research
and collect data on their own city or region to develop a portrait
of their location over the last century using methods similar to
those of the Lynds. Different assignments are given to each
student for information and data collection, interviewing, and
collecting images and major events. Data collected will
include information under each of the Lynds' six major themes:
getting a living, making a home, raising the young, using leisure
time, practicing religion, and community life. Students then
work together in small groups to develop their work for a joint
publication in which they will have an editor, a publisher, and
contributing authors for each chapter. Students will copy and
bind their collective work for the publication.
PBS: Wetheads
In this discovery lesson, the students will create stem and leaf plots
and back-to-back stem and leaf plots to display data collected from an
investigative activity.
PBS: Income Levels & Social Class: Is it all about cash?
In this teacher directed lesson, the students will have the
opportunity to graph, calculate percent, and create graphs using
spreadsheets.
PBS: Population Simulation with M&M's
This activity involves two simulations with M&M's® to explore
population growth and decay. The follow-up activity, Population
Simulations with Calculators introduces NOW-NEXT or recursive
equations as an accessible way to model this behavior and expand to
other population models.
Beginning Algebra Tutorial #9: Reading Graphs
In this tutorial we will be reading graphs. Graphs can be used
to visually represent the relationship of data. It can help
organize and show people statistics, which can be good for some and
not so good for others, depending on what the statistics show.
Organizing data graphically can come in handy in fields like business,
sports, teaching, politics, advertising, etc. Let's start
looking at some graphs.
Shodor
- Reading Graphs
Demonstrates the connections between formulas, graphs and words.
Shodor - Misleading Graphs
This lesson will challenge students to think creatively by having
them design and build water balloon catchers from random scrap
materials, while requiring them to take into consideration a
multitude of variables including: cost, maintenance, total capacity,
etc. After completing their water balloon...
Bar
Graphs:
Students will understand how to represent data using bar graphs.
Let's
Graph:
Simple online bar graph generator. Allows user to change title,
legend, labels, and values.
Create a Graph:
Virtual math manipulatives that allow students to make a variety of
graphs.
Baseball Stats:
The purpose of this Science NetLinks lesson is to use the Internet to
explore datasets and statistics in baseball.
Project SkyMath:
This web page was designed for middle school teachers. It contains 16
activities for presenting elements of the math curriculum, including
collecting and interpreting data.
Statistics:
The science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize and
analyze data in order to draw conclusions.
Cynthia
Lanius' Lesson:
Stressed Out - Slope as Rate of Change
What Color are Your Skittles?:
Students enter data into a spreadsheet to create a pie graph showing
the percentage of colors found in a bag of skittles
Weather Data On-line:
Students spend two weeks collecting
data to graph using a spreadsheet.
The Discount Is Right:
Students will visit specified Web sites in
order to complete an activity estimating and calculating the sale
price and/or original price of at least five items.
Coordinate Graphing:
Students will become familiar with plotting and locating points on the
coordinate plane. Gives students the opportunity to practice plotting
points with immediate feedback. Includes online graphing practice.
