Grade 8, Math
Std #11:
Determine the surface area and volume of rectangular prisms, cylinders, and pyramids.
  • Estimating surface area and volume of solid figures
  • Determining the appropriate units of measure to describe surface area and volume
  • Developing formulas for determining surface and volume of rectangular prisms, cylinders, and pyramids

Lesson Plans:

Experiment with Volume:
Students hypothesize about, measure, and then calculate the volumes of two cylinders formed from the same size sheet of paper.

Learning About Length, Area, Perimeter, and Volume of Similar Figures Using Interactive Figures:
Using this interactive figure, students have an opportunity to experiment with rectangles of different shapes and scale factors to observe and interpret the changes in perimeter and area.

Length, Perimeter, and Area:
This lesson is designed to examine the mathematical concepts of length, perimeter, and area.

Volume and Surface Area:
Two problem solving activities incorporating a study of perimeter and area.

Learning about Length, Perimeter, Area, and Volume of Similar Objects Using Interactive Figures: Side Length and Area of Similar Figures
Students can learn about the length, perimeter, area, and volume of similar objects using dynamic figures.

Rectangular Prisms Surface Area
Students calculate the area of rectangular prisms

Package This
Students design a new package for a soft drink

Module Math
Students review and perform geometric operations involving cylinders and cubes

Precision and Accuracy
Students learn the difference between precision and accuracy.

Sine Curve Orbits
Students show why a sine curve orbital  plot is created when an orbit is portrayed on a flat map.

How Much Trash?
Students increase awareness of the amount of trash per day, and to address ways to reduce and recycle trash.

Flowchart
Students write about a feedback loop encountered during the day using a flowchart diagram.

Waiting for Next Year's Model
Students explore the cabin sizes and crew capacities for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Space Shuttle, and Orbital Space Plane projects.

Skylab Versus International Space Station
Students compare the sizes of Skylab and the International Space Station.

Turn Up The Volume On Your Cylinders
Students determine the relationship between the dimensions and the capacity of a cylinder.

Several Cylindrical Surfaces
Students calculate and compare the volume and surface area of various cylinders.

Resources:

Geometry Formulae:
A comprehensive listing of all the different formulas you need to know to find the area of polygons.

Perimeter and Area:
A series of graphics that illustrate the relationship between area, volume, and perimeter of various geometric figures.
