Grade K, Math
Std 2:  Demonstrate addition by using numbers totaling 5 or less and subtraction by using numbers less than or equal to 5.
Example:  using objects, number stories, or real-life situations

Lesson Plans:

Ladybugs and Leaves
Students will investigate different ways a number can be expressed as a sum. (Sums will need to be adjusted for kindergarten.)

Easter Egg Math
A springtime activity designed for reviewing addition and subtraction facts and learning problem-solving skills.

Cups Add Up
Combines and separates sets of objects by a given characteristic (size, shape, color, and quantity) as readiness for the operations of addition and subtraction.

Goldfish Addition and Subtraction
Students use goldfish crackers to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.

Do It with Dominoes: Unit Overview:
In this Unit Plan (9 lessons), students explore the four models of addition (counting, sets, number line, and balanced equations) using dominoes. They also learn about the order property, the relation between addition and subtraction, and the result of adding 0.

Macaroni Math: Unit Overview:
In this Unit (7 lessons), students explore "take away" subtraction in several different context (counting, sets, number line, balanced equations, and inverse of addition) using pasta shapes. They also decompose numbers and explore both the zero property and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Begin With Buttons: Unit Overview:
In this Unit (8 lessons), students use buttons to explore logical and numerical relationships. Students explore the relationships between numbers and model addition and subtraction sentences with buttons.

Bunny Addition:
After listening to the story Count on Bunnies, students will solve bunny equations.

Join Them Together/Take Them Away:
In this lesson, students will be able to act out simple addition and subtraction stories using manipulatives and hyperstudio presentations. They will then transfer that knowledge onto paper activities.

Food Pyramid Power
In these lessons, students will explore properties of addition. The food pyramid is the starting point for these explorations. Students’ ability to classify forms the basis of algebraic thinking. In this unit, students explore sorting and patterning and apply these logical processes to the operation of addition in the set model. They also construct sets of a given number and find missing addends.
