Introduction to Fractions for Primary Students

I Want It All!
Students will distinguish one half and whole
parts and fit pieces together to make whole parts.
You Can Only Eat Half
After reading the book Eating Fractions by Bruce McMillan, the
teacher will cut fruit into halves and encourage students to eat only
half.
Fractions with Oranges
This lesson provides an introductory activity for fractions. Oranges
are used to show the difference between one whole, one half, and one
quarter.
Orange Slices:
In this lesson, students investigate oranges to find out if oranges
have the same number of slices. They also investigate the fractional
part of an orange.
To Half or Half Not:
In this lesson, students will use a geoboard to demonstrate different
ways to divide ways to divide a rectangle in half and then identify
equivalent fractions that represent one-half.
Chocolate Halves:
In this lesson, students will use Hershey's chocolate bars to learn
about half of a whole.
Kinder-Quilt:
This lesson is designed to help kindergarten students discover equal
halves of a square. after reading Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon
Quilt students will use the quilt pattern to learn about halves
and wholes.

Set, Let's Dough! It's a Matter of System:
In this lesson, students look at a complex system when they create
their own play dough by taking several parts and creating a whole.
Through their constructions, students gain an understanding that
individual parts are used to make a whole.
