  •  Recognizing like shapes in the environment
Examples:  clock - circle,  door- rectangle

Lesson Plans:

Fun With Shapes
Students learn the names of shapes and their qualities.

The Greedy Triangle
Students will build on their understanding of geometric shapes through reading and completing activities from The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns.

Two-Dimensional Objects
Students will identify two-dimensional shapes, give the similarities between two-dimensional shapes, and locate two dimensional shapes in the classroom environment.

Primary Geometry
The children will name, identify and categorize geometric shapes (triangle, square and rectangle) by the number and length of the sides.

Hurray for Shapes!
Students will create shapes using pipe cleaners and will be able to name the shape that they create.

Magazine Shape Search
Students will search for shapes in magazines, identify the shapes, cut out the shapes, and glue them to a chart.

What Shape Is It?
Students will identify and sort everyday objects according to the object's shape.

Going on a Shape Hunt: Integrating Math and Literacy:
Students are introduced to the idea of shapes through a read-aloud session with an appropriate book. They then use models to learn the names of shapes, work together and individually to locate shapes in their real-world environment, practice spelling out the names of items/shapes they locate, and reflect in writing on the process.

Introduction to Geometry for Primary Students
Children will learn to recognize shapes, create patterns and explore spatial relations and symmetry.

Shape House:
In this lesson, students will use craft sticks to form a house shape, embellishing the scene with other shape cut outs and crayons.

Color Zoo Shape Art
Students will recognize and name the basic geometric shapes: circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, and diamonds while creating their own picture of an animal.

Resources:

Making Triangles
Interactive geoboard activities encourage children to make and identify triangles. The activities can be extended to include additional shapes.

Shape Game
Students identify basic shapes. Includes an audio component.

Patch Tool
This student interactive allows students to create patches like those used in quilting. Available shapes include triangles, squares, parallelograms, and more.
