Grade K, Math
Std 10:  Complete data displays such as single-loop Venn diagrams and yes/no charts using real objects, concrete representations, or pictorial representations.
Example:  recording "yes" or "no" responses to the question "Do you
have a yellow pencil?" by placing students' names in the appropriate
             area of the Venn diagram

  • Responding to questions for the purpose of data collection
Examples:  choosing favorite color, answering yes or no questions
         from data displays

Lesson Plans:

Sort and Classify Objects
This site includes three separate activities that can be used to introduce students to the concept of classifying objects using a Venn diagram.

Introducing the Venn Diagram in the Kindergarten Classroom:
This lesson introduces the Venn Diagram to kindergarten students.

Sorting Time:
Students sort objects and symbols and make patterns with sorted objects. They make Venn diagrams and use their sortings to make linear patterns.

Many Sets of Buttons:
Students classify buttons and make disjoint and overlapping Venn diagrams.

Sorting Through Spiders:
In this lesson, students will classify and sort objects by their attributes using self-created spiders. Sorting circles, Venn diagrams, Dichotomous Keys, and KWL charts are used in this lesson.

Animal Cracker Sorting
In this lesson students will be given the opportunity to practice using mathematical vocabulary to describe a set of data. Following data collection students will also create a graph using the computer.

Resources:

Graphing Fun
The teacher constructs a magnetic graphing board and magnetic identification tags for students to use to record answers to daily survey questions.  An extensive list of daily questions is included.

Shape Sorter:
This website offers an interactive game using a Venn Diagram. This game would be best used in a whole group with the teacher playing the game.

Introducing the Venn Diagram
Students will click and drag items into a Venn Diagram based on the characteristics of each item.

John Venn and Venn Diagrams from Enchanted Learning
Enchanted Learning offers venn diagram activities and printouts of all types.  This site also includes a short amount of information on John Venn, the inventor of the venn diagram.
