Lesson Plans

Music to Math: Exploring the Relationships between Frequencies of Musical Tones
This lesson dealing with the frequency of musical tones is more accurately related to exponential functions. The CBL is required.

Chicago Public Schools
The properties of logarithms are developed and illustrated.  Some real-world connections are made.

Compound Your Way to a Million Bucks!
This lengthy lesson deals with the compound interest problem in a real world setting.

Rhinos and M&M’s® (Exponential Models)
This lesson from PBS is really an exponential model.  It creates an exponential model using M&M's.  It is also appropriate for lower grades.  There is an accompanying online video.

Sonic Booms and Logarithms
This lesson analyzes sonic booms using the decibel formula.  It provides a number of interesting links.

Modeling Exponential Growth
In this online lesson, students solve typical exponential problems such as those that model exponential growth and decay.

Can Cruddy Cool As Fast As Clean?
Students will investigate variations in cooling times for ordinary tap water and salt water. Data will be collected using the CBL unit and the TI-82 calculator to create and interpret data plots. Students will become familiar with Newton’s Law of Cooling and be able to verbalize and write conclusions made from the collected data.

Chicago Public Schools
The lesson for days 105 and 106 provide techniques, practice, and applications for solving equations involving natural logarithms.

Credit Cards: The Fine Print
This PBS lesson plan requires that you get a video to go with the lesson plan. It explores credit card terminology and balances over time.

Resources:

Log M + Log N
This is an interactive applet that demonstrates this relationship.

Addison-Wesley Worksheets
Extra practice on radical equations

Biography
Biography of John Napier, inventor of Logarithms.

Power of Quakes
Information about the Richter Scale, using logarithm equations. Power of Earthquakes are given.

Logarithms in the pH Scale
An interactive list of household products for students to arrange by order of pH magnitude

SOS Math
This site is an online tutorial that explains many of the concepts in Algebra 2. It includes exercises.

Function Models of Light Decay
This activity explores the development of a mathematical model for the decay of light passing through water. The goal of this investigation is a rich exploration of exponential models in context

QELP
This website is full of different data sets, including linear sets. The data is very clean and easy to use. Download data sets in Excel or Minitab format and add regressions using Excel or use the data for calculator activities.
