Precalculus
Std 12: Determine the equation of a curve of best fit from a set of data by using exponential, quadratic, or logarithmic functions.

Lesson Plans

Linear Regressions
This is a good lesson on finding regression lines by hand.  Error is evaluated by sums of squares of error but the lesson can be extended to include r value.

Linear and Exponential Regression
This relatively advanced lesson examines finding regression lines by hand. The formula for the r value is given.

Real Population Data
Students investigate real population data and plot them using the TI graphing calculator. Several activities are included as well as instructions on how to use the calculator to plot data.

What’s the [intersection] Point?
This unit introduces students to technology as a means of graphing linear equations on a graphing calculator and finding the point of intersection and inputting data into lists.

Chicago Public Schools
SCP lessons for days 166 to 168 deal with scattergrams and related topics.

Resources:

Running to Conclusions
Exponential Regressions applied to world record running times.

Scatterplot Guessing Game
This is a game that displays random scatterplots. Students match 4 of them to their correlation coefficient.

Data Sets
Although the title of the site relates to differential equations, it contains many data sets that are linear. There are many more that are exponential and sigmoidal. Each is in an easy-to-use format. Right-click and export to Excel or use type into a calculator by hand.

Time Series Data- Most Subjects
This is a massive collection of time-series data sorted by topic. Excel is helpful in managing the sometimes hundreds of data points. All are actual data.

QELP
This website is full of different data sets, including linear sets. The data is very clean and easy to use. Download data sets in Excel or Minitab format and add regressions using Excel or use the data for calculator activities.
