Std Oral Language VII-A:

A. Demonstrate increased facility with oral language for a wide range of purposes

  1. voice modulation (volume, speed)
  2. physical presence (eye contact, posture, etc.)
  3. articulation (speak clearly and correctly)
  4. focus (staying on topic)
  5. speak in grammatically correct, complete sentences
  6. incorporate appropriate vocabulary
  7. apply figurative language appropriately

Lesson Plans:

School News
Using a video camcorder, students will create a news report of events occuring at their school.

Write and Perform a Speech
The student will learn why its important to give a speaker your undivided attention and how to write an essay in a essay form.

Creating an Original Opera
In this lesson, students will use the GREAT PERFORMANCES and other web sites to learn about opera's dramatic and musical elements, and discover the similarities and differences between opera stories and students' own lives.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):

E/B: Answer simple factual questions about a presentation and represent nonverbally (i.e. gestures, pictures, graphic organizers) or with simple spoken words and phrases.
E/B: Identify the emotion conveyed by the speaker and express with simple spoken words, phrases or sentences; D: Identify some persuasive techniques used by the speaker (i.e. promises, dares); identify any unclear components; and express with simple, detailed sentences; E: Analyze persuasive techniques used by the speaker (i.e. promises, dares) and identify any unclear components.
E/B: Prepare (and possibly deliver) a simple narrative that follows a model provided by the teacher and express with simple spoken words, phrases or sentences with assistance, if needed; D: Deliver simple narrative and informative presentations and express with simple, detailed sentences; E: Deliver simple oral responses to literature, as well as narrative and informative presentations, with detailed sentences.
E/B: Identify the main idea conveyed by the speaker and express with simple spoken sentences; D: Draw conclusions based on general content and delivery of an oral presentation; E: Draw conclusions and some inferences based on an oral report from the speaker.
E/B: Prepare an oral presentation with a main idea and use gestures, pictures, tables, graphs, or charts and express with simple spoken sentences; D: Prepare and deliver an oral presentation with a main idea. Use volume and gestures to support the message and express with simple, detailed sentences; E: Prepare and deliver an organized oral presentation with a main idea and use volume, timing, and gestures to support message.
