| Lesson Plans:
Weathering and Erosion: Some Ways the Hydrosphere Affect the Geosphere
Students will explain the causes of erosion, describe the effects of
erosion, devise a method of preventing erosion, and model the before
and after effects of erosion.
Where will your home be in a million years?
Students will access information about the motion (speed and
direction) of the Earth's tectonic plates and make predictions.
Shifting Coastlines
Students will determine positions of the
North Carolina coastline at different times and decide what types of
archaeological information has been lost due to rising sea levels.
Earthquakes and Volcanoes
Students will compare maps of plate tectonics with population
density maps and to analyze what these maps imply about the
relationship between population and seismic hazards.
Landslides
Students will understand how to design an experiment and how to
control different variables in an experiment. Students will also
study different types of soil materials in landslides and how
scientists can predict where landslides might occur.
Rocks
Students will understand that Earth's surface is gradually reduced to
tiny pieces by erosion caused by water, wind, or glacial ice.
Cake Batter Lava
Students will understand some of the geological processes and the
structures that form as lava flows across planetary landscapes by
using cake batter as an analogy for lava.
Gravity and Erosion
Students will understand how gravity affects erosion and deposition.
Sediment Tubes
Students will observe how different density soils and rocks behave
in wind and in water. They will make predictions and careful
observations as they learn about sediment transport and sediment
rates in streams and rivers.
