Grade 2, Science
Std 10: Identify the impact of weather on agriculture, recreation, the economy, and society.
  • Recognizing the importance of science and technology to weather predictions

Lesson Plans:

House of Seasons
This activity will teach students about the seasons.

The Three Little Pigs in Earthquake Land
This lesson teaches students some of the basics of earthquakes and volcanoes. It also asks them to think about how people living in cities and suburbs must plan ahead by constructing sturdy buildings and preparing their homes and themselves for the possibility of a natural disaster.

The Impact of Natural Hazards Around the World
This lesson is designed to help students understand that the negative consequences of natural hazards can be reduced if we understand our vulnerability to learn to prepare for them.

Make a Weather Station
Students will be able to describe weather and relate how weather affects their daily lives; observe and record weather-related data; construct instruments for measuring weather; & explain and demonstrate how each instrument is used to measure weather.

Forcasting
Forecasting is an interactive lesson about weather forecasting. Students have different forecasting tricks explained to them and are encouraged to try these tricks on their own time.

What’s the Weather?
Daily weather observations are recorded and then summarized at the end of the week in the form of a bar graph.

Thermometers: What is the Temperature?
In this lesson students will learn more about heat energy by measuring temperature using a thermometer. They will also learn to read temperature and explain what should be worn in different seasons of the year.

Cloud Watching
In this lesson students observe clouds, draw them, color the drawings, and classify the drawings.

Measure Rainfall
This lesson provides materials for measuring rainfall.

Where Does Wind Come From?
Students will be introduced to the effects that heat has on creating wind.

Weather Maps
Students will understand basic information about weather and learn about different weather maps.

Weather Scope
This weather unit has five core lessons that build on one another. In lesson three students track weather like a meteorologist using weather instruments that made in lessons one and two.

The Effects of Hurricanes on the Quality of Life… And the Need for Preparedness
This lesson plan is for middle school students. However, it can be modified for younger students.

Exploring Cause and Effect Using Expository Texts About Natural Disasters
This lesson uses expository text to teach cause and effect of natural disasters.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

E/B: Students chart the weather using a barometer and thermometer and predict the next day's forecast. Students will make a chart illustrating and labeling what they saw in their observations; D: Students will chart, illustrate, and write about what they observed; E: ...and graph temperature and pressure readings over a period of time and make inferences as to their effect on the weather.
