Grade 3, Science
Std 2: Identify physical and chemical changes of matter.
  • Examples: physical—chopping wood, chemical—burning wood

Lesson Plans:

Making Ice Cream!
Each student will complete a recipe for ice cream in the bag.

Physical And Chemical Changes
The students will identify some physical and chemical changes of matter.

Matter and Heat
Students will be involved in demonstrating the relationship between molecules and states of matter.

WebQuest for Properties of Matter
This lesson includes a PowerPoint slide show and student activities.

Steel wool generating heat
This lesson demonstrates a chemical reaction that's fairly common all around us.

How salt can be used to lower the freezing point of water
This lesson demonstrates how salt interferes with water freezing.

Matter
Students will understand physical and chemical changes in matter.

Baggie Science
This activity introduces students to the idea of chemical reactions. As student teams work together the excitement mounts as they watch changes occur when the chemicals inside their zip-lock bag are mixed.

Physical Changes of Water
Using this experiment students will explore the physical changes of water.

Chemical Changes
Students will experiment with household items to observe chemical changes.

Chemical Change and Physical Change
Students will investigate chemical and physical changes of materials.

Resources:

The Mixture Lab Students will enjoy this site, they will use physical properties to separate mixtures. This site requires Adobe Shockwave.

Solids, Liquids, and Gases This set of activities is designed to help students understand the phases of matter.

Science Clips You will find an alphabetical list of science interactive movie clips.

Suggestions for English Language Learners (ELLs):
(E/B=Entering/Beginning, D=Developing, E=Expanding)

E/B: Students will observe, sequence and compare details showing how a solid can change to a liquid and then to a gas using the sun's heat. Students will illustrate their findings in sequence; D: ...and will describe what happens in each part of the sequence; E: ...same activity as the Developing proficiency level, but using more complex language.
E/B:  Students will investigate the rusting of steel wool and the burning of a candle. Students will use pictures and simple sentences to record their findings after a demonstration. D: Students will utilize the Scientific Method to observe the changes in the steel wool and the candle and report in their science journal; E: ...and will write more extensively in their journals.
E/B: Using pictures, students will label various parts of a picture as solid, liquid or gas; D: ...and will use more complex sentences with details to explain their choices; E: and will use more complex and detailed sentences to explain their choices.
