Std 4.1:  Identifying the geographic and political districts of legislative, executive, and judicial branches of national, state, and local governments

Lesson Plans:

District Decisions
Students will use a timeline to learn about reapportionment and redistricting.  Students will also debate redistricting based on municipal boundaries vs. population counts. (Although written for high school students this lesson can be reworked for middle school students.)

Representative Democracy: The Geography of Politics
This activity will illustrate the concept of representative government. The lesson will also apply geographical skills to interpret and analyze patterns which make up our nation's legislative boundaries of political representation.

A Congressional Scavenger Hunt
In this lesson, students work in groups to find names of Senators and Representatives, requirements to become a Congressperson, maps of states with many and few representatives, political cartoons and more for a Scavenger Hunt on Congress. Students create a poster or collage to display their findings.
