Students will identify the six economic functions of government; classify examples of government actions and policies within various economic functions; identify and evaluate two different positions on the role of government in the economy


Market Failures. 
In this lesson students will examine the role of regulatory agencies in response to market failures. Prior to the lesson, have students collect newspaper articles on the work of the five regulatory agencies.


Who Knows What Inefficiencies Lurk in the Hearts of Rent Controlled Housing Markets?
The Shadow Market Knows! Students will evaluate the effects of government imposed rent control.

Market Failures and Government Regulation: Is the Cure Worse than the Disease?

Economic Solutions to Pollution. 
After students have developed an understanding of externalities, they examine a case study of pollution in Los Angeles and determine a variety of solutions for this problem. The costs and benefits of these solutions are explored.
