| Lesson Plans:
Shopping for Souvenirs
"Shopping for Souvenirs" will help
children develop a broader sense of place by investigating the types
of souvenirs a traveler might purchase in Middle Eastern countries. It
is especially important for students to learn that places such as
Riyadh, Kuwait City, Baghdad, and Tel Aviv are more than strange names
heard during a time of war.
Year of Impossible Goodbyes
This lesson plan is an interdisciplinary activity--literature tied
into social studies. It requires the above mentioned accelerated
reader text.
Global Harmony: Designing an Online World Music Café
In this lesson, students listen to world music samples and try to
identify the countries of origin.
Exploring World History Through the Lens of a
Sailing Ship
In this lesson, students research examples of different types of
sailing ships, investigating the vessels as well as the politics,
economy, and people at the historical time and place the boat was
launched.
What's in a Name?
Toponomy is the science of naming places. Places are named for
specific reasons whether that place is just down the street or halfway
around the globe. The perspectives taken when choosing a name are
often cultural and/or political. Sometimes the history and culture of
an area may become apparent through the names of places within that
area -- as you we will learn in this lesson! (Click cancel twice to by

will identify and explain the significance of the names of some
African nations.
Cultural Symbols and the Characteristics of Place
This lesson explores the cultures of ancient and modern people as
reflected in their cultural symbols.
Culture Shock
This lesson asks students to think about how cultural customs differ
throughout the world.
Culture in the Cupboard
This lesson will help your students to identify some of the cultures
new to their part of the world and to understand more about cultural
diffusion.
Illustrating the Cultural Mosaic of a Region
Students create a poster showing important and shared characteristics
of people in a culture region. They also choose boundaries to delimit
the assigned culture region and defend their choices. This lesson is
most useful as a culminating activity after studying world regions.
