Std 11.2:  Discussing the relationship between a country's standard of living an its accessibility to natural resources.    

Lesson Plans:

Middle East: Land, Resources and Economics
Students will be able to describe major geographical features of the Middle East and explain how these features and other natural resources influence the economy of the area. (Although written for 9-12 grades this plan can be modified for 6- 8 grades.)

Eco Challenges
In this lesson, students will address two of the more pressing issues confronting continental Africa Ñ the related concerns of growing desertification and the scarcity of clean water.

Oil: The Problem or Solution to the World's Economic Future
This lesson requires students to analyze maps and charts in determining the distribution of oil on the Earth's surface and the economic impact oil transportation networks have on the rest of the world's economy.

Where in the World is Muscle Shoals & Vance, Alabama?
In this lesson, provided by the Geography Department at the University of North Alabama, students analyze how geography influences major economic activity in the state of Alabama.  From the resources of the Tennessee River to manufacturing and distribution, students learn how geography affects economic activity.

Rich, Poor, or Somewhere in the Middle
This lesson offers students an opportunity to use economic and social indicators to identify the connection between a country's access to resources and its economic development.

The USGS (United States Geological Survey)
This site contains satellite images of environmental change (this site includes satellite imagery on urban areas, agriculture, deserts, and many other types of regions on earth).

The Geography of Economic Activities
 A site that provides in-depth analysis of major industries. Teachers may want to use this information to show students relationships with manufacturing and where the distribution of natural resources are located.
