Grade 12, U.S. Government
Std 12:
Contrast the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a representative democracy

Lesson Plans:

Limitations on Freedom of Speech.
Students often times see the Bill of Rights granting them unlimited rights. The need for them to see the limits of those rights are important. This lesson helps them to see those limits.

In this lesson students will interpret the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Students will then examine four Supreme Court decisions which incorporated the Fourteenth Amendment's due process clause.

The Responsibility of the Jury
This activity is to clarify the need for citizen participation on trial juries, as mandated by the sixth Amendment to the Constitution.

This lesson analyzes thirty-second political campaign/issue advocacy advertisements. Students should already be familiar with the various propaganda techniques.

Perseverance and the First Amendment.
Students will be able to: · write a one-page response defining “perseverance”; · analyze the language of the First Amendment concerning the right to petition and assemble; · research historical examples of groups or individuals exercising their right to petition and/or assemble, including but not limited to abolitionists, child labor movement, suffragists, Civil Rights movement, and pro-life/pro-choice groups.

Political Advertising:
Students will view current political ads and learn how they make use of various commercial ad appeals. Students will also develop familiarity with basic videography terms.

Leading or Misleading:
Students analyze commercials and look for logical fallacies. They then use a storyboard template to make their own commercial for a fictitious candidate, using the techniques and fallacies they've learned.
