| Lesson Plans:
Attitudes
Towards Slavery in Colonial Virginia.
Servitude in the American Colonies
Students will compare and contrast European American indentured
servitude to African American servitude. Students will write an
opinion essay about whether European American indentured servitude was
the same as or different from African American servitude.
The Trans-Atlantic Passage
This lesson will give students the chance to explore the people
involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade, which resulted in the
enslavement of 12-13 million Africans between the early 1400s and the
late 1800s. Using the Atlantic Slave Trade map as a starting point,
the lesson will focus on those who were directly involved in the
Trans-Atlantic Passage.
Slavery and Native Americans 1600-1865
Native American slavery is a topic that garners very little, if any,
attention in history classrooms. Native American tribes, on a small
scale, practiced some form of slavery. The circumstances for Native
Americans in subjugation varied from tribe to tribe. Using the essay,
Slavery and Native Americans in British North America and the United
States: 1600 to 1865, students will investigate this lesser known area
of history.
The Impact of African Languages on American English.
This lesson can be
used to excite students about language and to stimulate them to
investigate what it can reveal about a nation’s history. Students should
understand that America, as reflected in our language, is a nation whose
people wear different faces and at one point in time spoke different
languages; yet, we all comprise the essence of America, a
shared language to which all contributed.
