4.3: Identifying factors leading to the development and establishment of political parties,
including Alexander Hamilton's economic policies and the election of 1800

Lesson Plans:

A Violation of the Sedition Law: United States v. Thomas Cooper
This lesson incorporates nine activities that investigate and compare the Alien and Sedition Acts with the First Amendment.  Students will use reproductions of the original documents for analysis.

The Alien and Sedition Acts
Students will understand the provisions of the Alien and Sedition Acts within their political and constitutional contexts; explore the issues raised by the prosecutions under these acts and the larger constitutional issues they raised; and explore the ways in which the issues raised by the Alien and Sedition Acts were instrumental in antebellum political conflicts, as well as today’s issues.

First Political Parties
Students will visit the ThinkQuest Library Web site's entries on American political parties. They will read about the first two parties in America and answer questions. Then
they will create a flyer that could have been distributed to influence people to join either the Federalist or Democratic-Republican Party.

The New Nation
Lesson module examines the changes that occurred in the United States during its first decade under the Constitution from the adoption of the Bill of Rights to the peaceful transfer of power between rival parties.
